Economic Development
Chapter 9: Development
Aim: Students will learn key economic and cultural factors that distinguish the level of development in regions of the world. Students will examine why development varies by gender and the extent of inequality between men and women is important an important element of a country's level of development. They will look at the importance of energy development and the role local diversity plays in the location of natural resources. Finally, students will look at alternative strategies for promoting development.
Chapter 10: Agriculture
Aim: Students will examine the origin and diffusion of agriculture by studying different societies and the very specific knowledge of their environment and available technology. Students will look at the local diversity in the consumption of food and nutrition, as well as the distribution of global hunger. Students will describe where different types of agriculture are practiced in developing and developed regions and what challenges each type of farmer faces.
Chapter 11: Industry and Manufacturing
Aim: Students will look at where industry originated and diffused. They will examine factors underlying why industry is distributed in a distinctive patterns and the environmental issues generated by industry. Lastly, students will analyze how globalization has increased competition to attract new industries and the increase of industries in less developed regions.
