This course introduces concepts and theories in modern psychology. Psychologists study why people think and act the way that they do. Psychologists are interested in behavior, as well as the mental and biological processes that influence peoples' thoughts and actions.
Have you ever wondered: What are someone's reasons for his/her actions? How much of my personality was created by my genes (nature) and how much by my environment (nurture)? Which parts of the brain control which functions? Why do we dream? What are the characteristics of certain psychological disorders? Why is Freud such a well-known name in psychology? How are psychological experiments conducted? Why do people often act differently in a crowd than alone? Why do some people act altruistically while others commit atrocities? This course will help to answer those questions and you will gain new perspectives on people's behaviors and motivations, allowing you to look at your own life and the world around you in a different way.

|
Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour. It is an academic discipline and an applied science which seeks to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases.
My promise to the learners: It is my goal to make all material relevant and meaningful and to present information and activities that will thoughtfully engage and give a greater understanding of what factors have shaped our modern world today. Readings or activity done inside and outside of class are assigned because it will genuinely help students understand the material we are covering. I challenge students to critically evaluate what we learn and discuss in class and ask questions about how the material relates to an essential understanding of our modern day world. |
