The Medici Family
The Medici was an important family within Florence. They were known as a humble family. The Medici Family was a very modest family, but in a very positive way and they were respected. Cosimo was an important person within the family. Cosimo’s father, Giovanni di Bicci de Medici, was the first man to ever open up a bank. He set up the bank in their home state, Florence. They were very careful with their customers. They did not just let the whole world come and borrow money from them, they chose their customers, and they chose wisely. They lent money from the wealth that they had from trading wool in the past.
The Medici Family lent their money to customers such as a pirate named Baldassare Cossa, who wanted to become a pope. With the money he then became a pope, but was an antipope. The Catholic Church regarded him as an antipope because he was against the Pope who the Catholic Church recognized as the rightful successor of Saint Peter. Baldassare Cossa was named Pope John XXIII in 1410 when he became Pope. Baldassare Cossa, made the Medici the paper bankers. The Medici family was also friends with Brunelleschi, who was an architect. He was the man who finished the dome in Florence. Brunelleseschi was a hard person to work with. He lost his anger very often and could not keep control of his feelings.
Cosimo's father died 1429. Cosimos' father, was a guide and mentor for Cosimo. In order for Cosimo to stay in power he had to be loyal to the people of Florence. When you have such great power you will always have rivals who would be competing against you. The more wealthy they got, the more jealous their rivals would become. One of their rivals were the Albizzi family. The Albizzi were the 2nd richest family in Florence, after the Medici family. They would do anything to take down the Medici family. With the father gone they thought it would be easier to take down Cosimo. So in 1433, Cosimo was arrested by the Albizzi family. He was then accused and proven guilty for… .He was about to be executed, but one of his allies paid a fee to the Albizzi family so that he would not be executed. Cosimo then left Florence instead.
A year later, despite the Albizzi being in charge, they lost complete control of the power that they had. So some of the people of Florence called Casimo back to help them. Cosimo was then back in business and was offered the role of king of Florence. Cosimo did not reject the offer and he then became king. While he was in charge of Florence, the bank grew bigger than ever. In 1464 Cosimo died, he was then known as the father of Florence. The day he died, was supposed to be the the fall of the Medici dynasty, but in fact it was not. Lorenzo, the grandson of Cosimo, continued the Medici dynasty. Lorenzo had a very hard time and they were indeed at the edge of the fall of Florence and the Medici dynasty. However, the Medici family had a very long history.
This video has more information about the Medici family (this is just part 1, you can watch the others in your spare time).
