Freudian Psychology and Leadership Styles
One of the interesting ways to look at this book is by analyzing it using Freud's well known concepts of Id, Ego, and Super Ego. As time passes, many of the characters will begin to change. Could this change be universal and predictable? In addition to Freud's theories, several characters take on the role of leader in the novel. Complete the Freud and Leadership Worksheet and be prepared to discuss these terms as a class.
Milgram Experiment and the Stanford Prison Study
Many psychologists and theoreticians throughout history have been fascinated with human nature and why humans do the things they do. In order to analyze some of the components and behaviors that we will be reading in LOTF, we will be taking a look at two very famous experiments that were used to test human nature. In both cases, the participants in the studies were unknowingly showing the darker side of humanity, a concept that William Golding speaks of through the actions of his characters.
A copy of the Stanford Prison Study and Milgram Experiment Worksheet will be provided and you will be asked to answer the questions regarding each study. The Stanford Prison Study website is still operational and chronicles the events of the experiment in detail. You will be expected to read through and understand the basic breakdown of the both studies and how they might apply to the book. Be prepared to discuss these examples in class.
When we have finished taking background notes on each of the studies we will be watching a video that shows the powerful effect each study has had on participants. The video includes real footage from both experiments. As you watch the video, please fill out the Milgram Experiment Re-visited Movie Guide.
